Identifying and expressing personal limits

Identifying and expressing your personal limits is a skill that can be developped at any age. It is particularly important during adolescence, with the quest for identity (who am I?): teens gradually learn, through their experiences, to know themselves better, to identify what is important to them, and to distinguish between what they consider acceptable and what is not.

Learning to identify your limits and express them in a healthy way to others involves, notably :

  • Getting to know yourself better, and acting in accordance with your values and needs.
  • Recognizing what is and isn't acceptable for yourself to prevent the build-up of stress and tension that can affect your mental health.
  • Cultivating positive, balanced and respectful relationships by listening to yourself and others.
